Longines has given its aviation flagship a ceiling-and-visibility-unlimited forecast. The Spirit Pilot and Spirit Pilot Flyback arrive this week in four new sky-blue references — matte blue dials with applied rhodium-plated Arabic numerals, a cleaner and more focused take on the brand’s flight-deck heritage.
The three-hand Spirit Pilot measures a versatile 39mm and 11.5mm thick, running the COSC-certified calibre L888.4 with a 72-hour power reserve. Its stablemate, the Spirit Pilot Flyback, packs a hand-wound column-wheel flyback chronograph — the L792.4, also chronometer-certified — into 39.5mm, with a bidirectional countdown bezel in blue ceramic, a nod to the timed turns of pre-GPS navigation. Both hold 100 metres of water resistance, and both come on blue rubber with an easy-change system or a steel bracelet.
What is striking is how much watch Longines delivers under the €5,000 line: the three-hander opens at €2,600 on rubber, while the Flyback tops out at €5,400 on bracelet — territory where a certified, column-wheel, hand-wound flyback movement is essentially without company. These are permanent-collection additions, in boutiques now.
The Spirit line has always traded on the winged-hourglass brand’s real aviation ledger — Amelia Earhart, Howard Hughes, the polar navigators. In sky blue, the connection is finally literal. For a first serious pilot’s watch, or a summer-wristed alternative to yet another black dial, the forecast is very good indeed.
