In honour of International Women’s Day, Pomellato, the renowned Milanese jewellery house, hosted a powerful panel discussion titled “When Women Lead” at the Lana Dorchester Hotel in Dubai. The event brought together a dynamic group of women – CEO Sabina Belli, filmmaker Nayla Al Khaja, entrepreneur Omaira Farooq – all moderated by the experienced journalist Louise Nichol.
The focus? Highlighting the achievements of women across diverse fields, while fostering a conversation that goes beyond a single day of celebration.
Leading by Example: Pomellato’s Commitment to Women
Pomellato has a long-standing history of championing women. Their #PomellatoForWomen initiative, launched by CEO Sabina Belli in 2017, embodies this commitment. “Pomellato, caring for women since 1967,” is more than just a motto. It’s a mission to empower women through representation, inclusivity, and a celebration of female leadership.
Belli, one of the very few female CEOs in the global fashion industry, emphasized the importance of open dialogue. “We need to discuss these topics and share our personal experiences…for the next generation, including all the women in this region, where entrepreneurship and leadership are strong realities.”
Shattering Stereotypes, Inspiring the Next Generation
The discussion shed light on the broader definition of leadership, venturing beyond corporate boardrooms to encompass the cultural and philanthropic spheres. Nayla Al Khaja, the UAE’s first female film director, highlighted the lack of women behind the camera. “There’s a massive mountain to push with the stories we need to tell…we are natural-born storytellers, this is why it’s insane there aren’t enough women sharing stories in the world.”
Omaira Farooq, a multi-disciplinary entrepreneur, focused on the importance of mentorship and collaboration. “As women, we need to educate other women…it’s not about sabotaging other women, it’s about helping.”
These successful women offered valuable insights for aspiring leaders. Education, mentorship, and fostering a spirit of collaboration were key themes. By dismantling stereotypes and showcasing diverse pathways to success, they ignited hope for the future generation of female leaders.
A Call to Action: Keeping the Conversation Going
“When Women Lead” wasn’t just about celebrating achievements. It was a call to action. The panellists stressed the need to keep the conversation flowing, not just on International Women’s Day but every day.
Through initiatives like Pomellato For Women and forums like this panel discussion, positive change is ignited. It’s a ripple effect, empowering women across industries and inspiring them to reach their full potential. The message is clear: Women leading isn’t just a future possibility, it’s a powerful reality happening now.
