October 2026 watch auction results — auction rolex paul newman daytona 6241 sothebys paris

The Verdict from Paris

When we previewed October’s auction week, the question hanging over Paris was what a fresh-to-market Paul Newman would fetch. The answer came this week: €448,000. The circa-1968 Rolex Daytona reference 6241, its exotic dial untouched by the market for over half a century, drew fifteen bids at Sotheby’s Fine Watches sale in Paris before hammering at €350,000 — with premium, roughly half a million dollars against a low estimate of €120,000. Fresh blood, it turns out, still quickens the pulse.

Paris had depth beyond its headliner. A platinum F.P. Journe Centigraphe Souverain brought €307,200, a white-gold GMT-Master II with sapphire bezel took €153,600, and a Comex-issued Sea-Dweller 1665 — diving history in steel — made €102,400.

But the week’s loudest result landed in New York, where Phillips closed its Sessions sale on Friday with every one of its 88 lots sold. The star was a steel Voutilainen 28Sport, number five of eight, which sailed past its $120,000–240,000 estimate to finish at $1,016,000 — seven-figure territory for the Finnish master’s sports watch, and further proof that independent watchmaking remains the market’s brightest flame. Two F.P. Journes each brought $304,800, and a Jaeger-LeCoultre Atmos celebrating Gustav Klimt chimed in at $152,400.

The supporting sales told a more textured story. At Bonhams in New York, an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Mini Frosted Gold topped the sale at $76,700, though the H. Moser Pioneer Tourbillon Miami we had flagged found no buyer — a reminder that even in a hot market, the hammer is not a formality. Christie’s online Hong Kong edit closed at HK$23.1 million, its surprise an Eska pink-gold wristwatch with a cloisonné enamel dial that ran to 37 bids and HK$1.2 million.

The scoreboard, then: freshness wins, independents soar, and the market is choosing its battles with care. The next test comes on 18 October, when nine F.P. Journes cross the block at Antiquorum in New York — a sale that now carries rather more weight than it did a week ago.
