There once was a time when wellness meant a weekend spa break or the occasional yoga retreat: a pleasant pause from everyday life, then back to the grind. But one look at the range of wellbeing concepts taking shape today, however, and it’s easy to see that times have certainly changed. In fact, the movement is increasingly becoming a guiding force in not just how we live, but how we travel too. Think evidence-based longevity programmes and immersive stays designed to reset body and mind: travellers are seeking experiences that go well beyond relaxation to genuine renewal. It’s a shift reflected in the numbers too, with Statista reporting that the global wellness tourism market is projected to reach US$1.35 trillion by 2028, more than double its 2022 value of just over US$637 billion.
As travellers look to broaden their horizons and escape the crowds in search of more meaningful experiences, Saudi Arabia is emerging as a compelling new hotspot, blending pristine nature, cultural depth and next-gen destinations that speak to this new wave of conscious luxury seekers. “The Red Sea is unlike anywhere else on this earth,” Lindsay Madden-Nadeau, senior director of wellness strategy at Red Sea Global, tells GMT GCC. “Its waters hold a higher concentration of magnesium and minerals that naturally nourish the body and skin, while its landscapes, vast deserts, coral-filled seas and silence that stretches for miles awakens a deep sense of restoration and ‘landing’ at the destination.”
That, combined with sustainable design, scientific innovation, the arrival of leading global health operators and a cultural foundation of community anchored by generous Saudi hospitality, are just some of the reasons why the region is poised to become a global benchmark for integrated living and regenerative travel.
At the heart of this evolution is AMAALA — a purpose-built city on the unspoiled shores of the Red Sea which, under the leadership of Nick King and team, and guided by Lindsay’s wellness vision, is being shaped as a destination where longevity science meets desert ritual, and where nature, culture and intention form the backbone of every guest journey. “What makes AMAALA unique is not only its purpose — to redefine human flourishing — but also its sense of place,” she explains. “It’s a place where the desert meets the sea, and the very air carries a sense of vitality and renewal.”
Lindsay, who is also vice chair of the Global Wellness Tourism Initiative, is now nearly three years into the project, bringing with her some serious global knowledge thanks to 20-plus years spent shaping wellbeing strategies for the likes of Raffles, Fairmont and Accor. “Working in hospitality taught me to truly understand guest expectations and the art of delivering luxury at the highest level,” she explains. “I became the guest, anticipating needs, refining experiences and holding myself to the same standards I expected as a traveller.” Yet while she loved luxury hospitality, she could see wellness evolving far beyond what traditional brands were able to offer, and as such wanted to create more intentional, transformative programmes and experiences that felt both authentic and commercially sustainable to a modern traveller. “That’s what led me to Red Sea Global,” she adds.
As to be expected, wellness is so much more than just a buzzword at AMAALA. “It is a lifestyle that supports our health and balance in varying degrees, allowing guests and visitors to explore how the movement shows up for them,” explains Lindsay. Unveiling itself through the likes of medical longevity programmes, mindful walks down its linear park, infrared therapies, cold plunges, breathwork, biohacking and so much more, the city brings together ancient desert traditions and cutting-edge science in a holistic ecosystem powered by 100 per cent renewable energy.
Then, of course, there’s the myriad of world-leading brands vying for a piece of the pie too. Case in point? Clinique La Prairie is AMAALA’s longevity partner, combining advanced medical science and modern diagnostics with time-honoured healing traditions to deliver holistic programmes that promote vitality and long-term health. Renowned for its Master Detox and Stem Cell Advanced Aesthetics, the brand will be bringing its expertise in longevity to AMAALA’s transformative wellness offering.
Equinox Resort will also be opening at AMAALA, featuring 128 elegant accommodations including two penthouses, alongside world-class fitness and spa facilities. Guests will be able to book advanced treatments such as cryotherapy, IV drips, mineral baths and hyperbaric chambers designed to boost performance and recovery; enjoy a magnesium-infused rooftop pool and spa, and work out in the signature Equinox Fitness Club, which promises a sleek environment for movement and training.
Elsewhere, Jayasom Resort is also underway, set to serve up an integrated health and lifestyle programme designed to support guests of all generations. “Their goal is to encourage shared experiences, nurture relationships, improve communication and help families reconnect through shared wellbeing, something that no-one else is really doing,” adds Lindsay.
With Red Sea Global preparing to open 11 resorts across the destination and welcome its first guests to AMAALA between now and early next year, there’s no denying we have plenty to look forward to in the not-so distant future. “For starters we will be curating a year-round calendar of events, welcoming globally-recognised practitioners and facilitators to lead workshops, mentorship programmes and heritage experiences deeply rooted in Saudi culture,” enthuses Lindsay. Each gathering will be thoughtfully designed in collaboration with local experts, ensuring guests leave with a profound connection to Saudi’s timeless traditions of wellbeing.
And AMAALA isn’t restricting its activities to purely on-site — a Swiss offshore sailing team, skippered by Alan Roura, competed under its name in the Ocean Race Europe 2025, and come 2027 the race will have its finish line in the Red Sea at the development itself.
“Our vision is to cultivate a collective of soulful talent, positioning AMAALA as a destination renowned for attracting the world’s best,” she adds. “We want people to journey to AMAALA for weekend retreats that refuel the soul, spark new perspectives and allow them to depart carrying the true essence of Saudi culture in their hearts.” Watch this space…
