Liquid Gold

Ancient principles, futuristic technology and addictively good-looking design come together in HYT’s sporty new S1 collection — easy to wear, and even easier to love.

There’s a strange kind of poetry in HYT’s timepieces. A young brand, only born in 2012, it nevertheless carries the inspiration of civilisations past. But while Ancient Egyptian water clocks may have served as the spark that ignited this truly unique concept’s development, when it comes to looks, there’s nothing traditional about HYT — at all. A brand that allows time to flow smoothly, like sand through an hourglass, it removes the ticking and tocking of a standard second, minute and hour timepiece and instead takes a ‘glass half full, glass half empty’ approach. An eye-catchingly coloured liquid signifies the slow progression of the day’s 24 hours, gradually displacing a clear liquid and allowing for visualisation of how much of your time has flowed past, and how much you still have left to revel in. Where the two liquids meet inside their delicate glass capillary signifies the current time, controlled by an ingenious system of bellows that push and pull its volume in perfect harmony around the outside of each timepiece’s dial. Poetry in motion? It sure sounds like it. Despite being consistently and imagination capturingly popular, things haven’t always been smooth sailing for HYT. Founded by Lucien Vouil lamoz and Patrick Berdoz, their daringly different concept and bombastic 48mm timepieces caused a stir. But as for many brands, Covid spelled problems and HYT was forced to close in March 2021. However, just like the unstoppable flow of a river, within a year it was back and better than ever. HYT is now under the steady hand of Vahé Vartzbed, who joined as General Manager in August 2023 and took the role of CEO in June 2024.

A New Flow
Which brings us right up to date with the launch of HYT’s S1 collection featuring the Titanium DLC Blue, Titanium DLC Green and Beadblasted Titanium Red models as part of its permanent lineup. With these three timepieces, HYT has distilled over a decade of mechanical alchemy into its most mature, wearable and energetic form yet. Think high-octane horology where engineering meets art and time flows — literally. At the core of the collection beats the brand’s signature fluidic timekeeping, maintaining the sci-fi energy, while dialling up both wearability and comfort. Framed in titanium and featuring a transparent, openworked structure, the S1’s design feels like the cockpit of a hypercar fused with a spaceship control panel. And that’s exactly the point. This is a machine for measuring time, not just wearing it. The Blue and Green editions come in striking black DLC titanium, letting the bold blue and vivid green pop as they wend their way around the dial. The Red variation, however, boasts a new concept for HYT: silver and black beadblasted titanium for one step even further into futuristic style.

Where previous HYTs leaned toward aggressively avantgarde, the S1 walks a subtler, more architectural line. The case profile is sleeker, measuring up at a slimmed-down 45mm, its lines harmonious. The use of Super-LumiNova beneath the capillary system creates the illusion of the fluid glowing in the dark — an arresting, almost biological detail that feels alive on the wrist. There’s also a new emphasis on tactility. The newly-designed crown, for instance, offers a more intuitive grip and smoother winding experience. The overall package is lighter, tighter and built for motion — an HYT you can throw on with a bomber jacket and sneakers without looking like you’re piloting the Starship Enterprise. But, as ever, what makes the HYT S1 truly compelling is the philosophical underpinning of the brand’s fluidic display. The idea of time as a flowing, moving substance harks back to the Nile’s flooding, ancient water clocks and the idea that time is not a tick but a tide. That ethos gives the S1 a depth of meaning that sets it apart from the high-complication herd. And yet, despite the ancient resonance, the S1 is effortlessly modern. It’s a watch for now — unapologetically tech-forward, design-driven and emotionally engaging. In a landscape of retro reissues and safe bets, HYT’s S1 feels like a deep breath of futuristic air. HYT has found its stride in the S1 collection, with its fusion of mechanical genius, design charisma and philosophical depth. It’s not just a cool watch, but a cool idea that’s been refined, redefined and executed with finesse — and it’s proof that still waters most definitely run deep.
