URWERK has spent nearly three decades teaching the wandering hour to do things Breguet never dreamed of, and with the new UR-300 Time Quantum it borrows its metaphor from physics’ strangest corner. The display is built around two linked “atoms” — paired elements of the satellite mechanism conceived so that when one flips, the other flips with it, instantly, like entangled particles. Watching the hour change is the point: through each hour an ingenious arrangement of LIGA-fabricated arm, sprung rack and stationary cam lets the display creep forward, and at the top of the hour the rack releases and the whole constellation snaps 72 degrees ahead in a blink. Time, in URWERK’s hands, moves in quantum leaps.
The case is pure house style: grade 5 titanium, 45.2 by 58.8 millimetres with the crown at twelve, ribbed flanks and a sapphire dome, offered bare or in shadowy AlTiN coating — 25 pieces of each, 50 in all. Beneath the theatrics lies a telling change of engine. The automatic UR-30.01V is now built on a Vaucher 3000-series base — succeeding the Zenith Elite calibres of earlier models — running at 4Hz with twin barrels, a free-sprung balance, a 44-hour reserve and URWERK’s Dual Flow Turbines to cushion the winding. A three-sector running-seconds scale keeps the dial honest.
The price is CHF 168,000 before taxes — serious money, though URWERK’s Gulf following, among the region’s most devoted audiences for independent haute horlogerie, has never needed convincing. When we covered the house’s Golden Scorpion in September, we called URWERK watchmaking’s science fiction made metal; the UR-300 suggests the laboratory has simply moved deeper into the quantum realm. The satellites still wander. Now they do it together.
