Vacheron Constantin Overseas Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin Azure

The Colour of Thirty Years

Vacheron Constantin marks 30 years of the Overseas with a 200-piece Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin in a new azure lacquer.

Anniversaries in watchmaking tend to arrive with fanfare. Vacheron Constantin has chosen instead to mark thirty years of the Overseas with a change of light. The new Overseas Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin arrives in a shade the maison calls azure — a lacquered blue noticeably lighter and less saturated than the deep navy that has anchored the collection since 2016, a colour that shifts with the sun the way open water does at midday.

The watch beneath the dial is familiar in the best sense. The 41.5mm case is 18-carat white gold and just 8.1mm thick, a sleight of hand made possible by Calibre 1120 QP/1, the self-winding perpetual calendar movement that measures a scant 4.05mm and will not need correcting until the year 2100. Day, date, month, leap year and a moon phase — its disc lacquered in the same azure — are arranged with the symmetry that has made this reference one of the quiet greats of the genre. Through the sapphire caseback, Côtes de Genève and a 22-carat gold rotor bearing the collection’s compass rose remind you who built it.

True to Overseas form, versatility is built in: the integrated white gold bracelet gives way, without tools, to two included rubber straps in white and denim blue. It is a perpetual calendar you could genuinely wear to the beach club, which is rather the point of the collection, born in 1996 as Vacheron Constantin’s passport to the world.

The catch is arithmetic. The Azure edition is limited to 200 individually numbered pieces, price on application, and watches like this are typically spoken for before they reach a vitrine. For Gulf collectors — among the most devoted audiences the Geneva maison has — the conversation with the boutique should probably happen sooner rather than later.
